This summer is going to be one of adventure. I have spent the last five years working hard and am about to bein graduate school. I started off the celebration by going to the desert in southern Utah with one of my best friends.
We started our trip in Escalante. We arrived in the late afternoon and took a short walk. The next day I caught the sunrise and we adventured a short ways down a wash where we found a bunch of cool textures and lots of pink. We shared our campsite with lizards, desert mice, hares, ravens, beetles and small yellow-breasted birds.
We spent a day hiking in the Escalante river, where we found a picnic spot and waded in the river for the afternoon. We saw a ton of wildflowers and big trout.
The next day we headed to Upper Calf Creek, where we hiked down to the top of a water fall and a small oasis with a pool where we spent the afternoon. We saw a snake and dragon flies on yellow flowers. The trail was marked with piles of rocks called cairns. The last part of the hike was straight up in the heat. We made it though!
On our way out, we spotted a super majestic coyote, we both felt very moved by the encounter. We drove through Capitol Reef listening to '90s music, headed to San Rafael Swell where we camped in a secluded spot at the mouth of a slot canyon. The skies were beautiful, the rocks were beautiful but it was filled with bugs.
We adventured into the slot canyon the next day and found so many great colors and textures. There was a tamarisk in bloom, gorgeous but invasive.
After our hike, we packed up and went straight to Moab, where my friend's family let us stay in their super comfortable condo. We lived the life of luxury and soaked up the sun the next day on a "locals" hike to a couple swim spots. The second pool we had all to ourselves for a couple hours. We saw more lizards, looked like a dancing male and a pregnant female in addition to a huge cactus patch. Back at the house we watched two lizards on the patio for hours, enjoyed their hot tub and felt and the feels together.
We ate like kings - carne asada, thai curry, shakshuka, sausage and potatoes au gratin. Great trip! Excited for the next.
